Our Review

We've waited a long time for a series of products like the Privacy Call Series, to stop unwanted calls and manage communications from a single line…and at a very affordable price.

The Privacy Call ID Screener is the latest addition to the Privacy Call series. This model offers the first feature that we've tested that qualifies calls into three categories, using Caller ID service from your telephone provider. Once you place a caller on the 'Invited' list, their calls ring right through, without interference from the ID Screener. Those on the 'Excluded' list cannot ring the phone or leave a message. These calls are simply dropped. Any anonymous callers with blocked Caller ID, or those not on your 'Invited' or 'Excluded' list can either enter a private code that you set, or can leave a message without ringing the phone. We found that, by using the 'Wildcard' feature, we could 'Invite' or 'Exclude' entire area codes, prefixes and number sets, which makes effective call screening a breeze. Another method of 'Inviting' or 'Excluding' numbers is to press the yellow button on the front of the unit to catagorize the last inbound call. Press once to 'Invite' and twice to 'Exclude.'

This means that, now when the phone rings, you'll know it's someone you want to talk to. Besides being a truly effective call screening device with built-in outgoing announcements, other features include "900 & 976" call restriction, and the ability to automatically forward calls to your cell phone, voicemail or alternate location of your choice,* and a 'Time Feature' to set hours on a daily basis when you don't want the phone to ring at all, (except in emergencies for qualified callers) WOW! This is the product that our customers have been asking for!

The sleek and sophisticated design gives the user a hint of the robust engineering and construction that went into these American-made units.

Connecting the Privacy Call ID Screener was as easy as connecting the provided telephone cord from the wall jack to the "Telco Port" of the unit, connecting the power cord to "12VAC" jack and wall receptacle, the telephone to the "Phone" port, and the answering machine to the "Answer" port. A diagram was provided to reassure us of the proper setup.

From there, we were ready to answer and screen incoming calls. The unit performed flawlessly in this function. Our phones did not ring until the proper codes were entered, but 'Invited' callers could ring right through. Without a private code, our answering device would take a message without ringing the phones. Those we placed on the 'Excluded' list were unceremoniously dropped.

Now we were ready to try more of the functions and experiment with programming.

All programming is easily performed from the telephone(s) attached to the Privacy Call. For instance, to change the first outgoing message (there are two), it is a simple matter of picking up the handset, pressing '#-#' then '1-1', then record our message (up to 40 seconds). Here is an example of a personalized message that you can easily record: "You have reached 555-1212. Invited callers, please enter your code now, or leave a message. Thank you!" The second outgoing message default is: "Please hold while your call is being connected. If your party does not answer, press '1' to leave a message.

To change the user access codes (three unique codes are possible) the key entry was '#-#' then '3-1' then the code we chose '5-5'. Now invited callers could ring through after the announcement begins by pressing '5-5'

It took us only minutes to begin to configure the unit to our specifications. Included in the instructions is a simple list of the programming codes, should anything need to change. Here are some of the programmable features that can be changed with ease:

  • Enter 'Invited' and 'Excluded' numbers
  • Set the times when the phone is not to ring at all, except in emergencies, on a one time or daily basis;
  • Turn Distinctive ringing on an off;
  • Restrict outbound '900' and '976' numbers;
  • Change access codes;
  • Change both outgoing messages;
  • Temporarily disable Call Screening function;
  • Forward calls to alternate number.

Best of all, if you need to change any of the available features, you can do it from any phone on the premises! With simple touch-tone input, you can have your calls follow you anywhere you are, and never give out your alternate or cell phone number. To avoid unwanted calls to your frowarded number, calls are pre-screened before they are forwarded, for peak security and economy.

Overall, we highly recommend the entire line of products. The choice would not be "if" we would choose one of these products, but "which" product would we choose to give us all of the features and flexibility that meets our individual needs.

Their "NO UNWANTED CALL GUARANTEE" is a promise that they can keep with this series. We couldn't find any way to make the phone ring without being on the 'Invited' list or by entering the proper code. This product is like having a firewall for your telephone!

It's obvious why the manufacturer has received the endorsement of industry giant Motorola, and numerous design awards from the electronics industry for their insightful and innovative designs and products.

How complicated is the installation process?

The unit plugs into a normal phone system using phone jacks. Simply take the phone jack which was plugged into your phone, and plug it into the Privacy Call. Then take the line that comes with the Privacy Call and connect it to your telephone. Plug in the Power Unit to the nearest electric outlet, and you are ready!

Yes. It works in conjuction with Caller ID, if you want, so that you can be assured that the person causing your phone to ring is indeed an invited caller and is someone you want to talk to, although it is likely that uninvited callers will not ring your phone.

How do I forward calls to another number?

All programming is done through your touch-tone phones. First the code is entered to turn on the call forwarding feature, then the forwarding number is entered. It is a very simple customizing step.

How does the Privacy Call ID Screener eliminate computer-generated telemarketing calls?

When a computer dialer hears a recorded, rather than a human voice, it will simply hang up. The computer will not know to remove your name from their call list, but it will most likely do so after a number of unsuccessful attempts.
